UPDATE to CES School Start Up Information

Dear CES Families,

I hope that everyone will enjoy the last weekend of August!  It looks like it will be a bit colder than usual, but the temperatures for start up next week are looking nice and seasonal!

As we knew it would, our world continues to change and evolve more quickly than we might prefer but, undaunted, we adapt and carry on!  With that said, I would like to give you some updates to the start up notice that we sent on Wednesday and also review some of the important details.


Staffing: CES had 25 students move to an online teaching environment for the year and so Ms. Lau has been reassigned to teach a Grade 5 online class.  This change means that the “3 Lau” class has been dissolved, our classes have been reconfigured, and all class lists have been redone.   The biggest such change will be that Ms. Hines will now be teaching a straight Grade Three class rather than a split three/four.   All the online students continue to be enrolled and supported at CES and Ms. Lau is still a CES teacher.  Class lists are still being reviewed and will be made public on Tuesday, Sept 1.

Scenario Two Cohort: Another important element of our reentry plan are the cohorts in the event that our school moves to ‘Scenario 2’ in which students would attend school in person on alternate days. In conjunction with W.G. Murdoch School:

  • Cohort “A” would be students with last names starting with A-J  
    • Would attend Monday, Wednesday and every second Friday
  • Cohort “B” would be students with last names starting with K-Z 
    • Would attend Tuesday, Thursday and alternating Fridays.

As with the staggered entry days, if you have a student in your home with a different last name than other students in the home, we can adjust the cohort for that student if you inform the office.

Meet the Teacher: Our in-person “Meet the Teacher” day has been canceled due to Covid restrictions, and so we will be sending out a “Meet the Teacher” video to all CES families on Tuesday, Sept 1.  Please watch for a link to come in your in-basket next Tuesday!

Staggered Lunch Times: In order to support social distancing we are going to be running three staggered lunch hours for our students.  While this will not affect students who stay for lunch, parents of students who go home will need to be aware of their kids schedule which is as follows:

1.      Grade 4 and 5: (5D, 5RK, 4/5V, 4G) – 12:00 – 12:50

1.      (12:00 – 12:30 play outside / 12:30 – 12:50 – eat)

2.      Grade 3 and Half of Grade 2 (2B, 2/3L, 3H )-  12:10 – 1:00

1.      (12:10 – 12:30 – eat / 12:30 – 1:00 play outside)

3.      Grade 1 and Half of Grade 2  (2Q, 1A, 1M) – 12:40 – 1:30

1.      (12:40 – 1:00 – eat / 1:00 – 1:30 – play outside)


Student Lunch Items: To ensure COVID safety, school staff will not be able to assist students in opening their lunch items.  Please ensure that your children are able to open all of their lunch or snack items themselves, without assistance from adults or other students.   If a child is unable to open a lunch item, we will provide them with pre-packaged items from our snack-attack fridge and/or breakfast program and return unopened items home for future use.  Please also be assured that we will never allow a child to go hungry and will ensure that they have enough to eat regardless of the above procedure.

Firewood: There is a pile of pre-cut firewood in the CES parking lot which families are welcome to help themselves to for as long as it lasts.

Review of important details:

Daily Health Check:  (This is a critical requirement!) Families are required to complete the Daily Health Check (click on blue link to open PDF.) If you answer YES to any of the questions, your child must stay home.

Student Illness: When a student is exhibiting signs of illness at school, they will be moved to the infirmary.  The office will contact families/emergency contact and will be required to pick-up their child within 1 hour.

Student Drop Off/Pick Up: Parents dropping off/picking up students must remain in their vehicle or wait away from the school grounds. Parents are currently only to enter school grounds by appointment.

Entering the School: At this time, parents/family members are not permitted in the school unless they have an appointment.  Appointments and arrangements to drop off items/lunch etc. may be made by contacting the school office for CES at 403-946-5696 or WGM at 403-946-5665

Staggered Entry Grade 1-5- September 2 to 4th: Students will be cohorted into 3 groups based on their last name.  Upon arriving at the school on their assigned day, students will be greeted by their teachers.  Grade 1 and 2 will meet on the Front Lawn, and Grade 3-5 will meet on the Playground Tarmac.  Teachers will be present with grade signs and will take students to their classrooms.  School starts at 08:40.

If siblings in your household have different last names but reside together, please contact the school so we can cohort them together (even if they attend different schools).

Kindergarten Staggered Entry The kindergarten entry procedure will change from the information that we sent by letter over the summer.   As we are unable to have parents in the building, the September 2nd orientation will now be done on Zoom instead of at school. Kindergarten parents will receive an email with the zoom link early next week.

Mask use: Please remember that mask use is mandatory for all staff, visitors, and students in Grade Four to Five and encouraged for students in Kindergarten to Grade Three.  Students who are unable to wear a mask due to medical reasons can be granted an exemption from the rule by bringing a note from their parents.

CES Entrance Protocols In order to ensure proper movement in the school, students will be entering through assigned doors for entering and exiting. See this link to the school map for clarity.

Doors will be unlocked at 8:40, students will be expected to enter the school wearing a mask and then sanitize their hands, under the direct supervision of a staff member.  Students must go directly to their classrooms.

At the end of the school day, students must exit from their assigned door and sanitize their hands as they leave.
